Safety tips from the fire department

The Greenville City Fire Department’s Halloween tips:

  • Use glow sticks or battery lights in jack-o’-lanterns instead of candles.
  • Keep decorations away from heat sources and exits clear; test smoke alarms.
  • Plug inflatable yard decorations into a GFCI-protected outlet.
  • Choose costumes that fit and do not trail; face paint is safer than a mask.
  • Give children flashlights or glow sticks so drivers can see them.
  • Adults should go with young children. Cross at corners and crosswalks, look left, right and left again, and put phones away.
  • Where there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic.
  • Drivers: slow down in neighborhoods and watch medians and curbs.
