Unofficial results show school trustees Chuck Saylors and Ann Marie Middleton losing. County Council District 28 is 28 votes apart, close enough for a recount.

Two members of the Greenville County Schools Board of Trustees lost their seats Tuesday, according to unofficial results. One of them, Chuck Saylors, has represented District 20 since 2002.

On Greenville County Council, the District 28 race is separated by 28 votes out of more than 20,000. That is well inside the margin at which state law requires a recount.

The figures are the unofficial results from Greenville County Voter Registration and Elections, as posted on the state’s election results site and checked Thursday morning. Provisional ballots had not been counted. Our main election results story covers the state House races and the sales tax questions.

School board: two incumbents out

Six of the 12 seats on the school board were on the ballot. Four were contested. School board races are nonpartisan. The winner is shown in bold.

Write-in votes are left out of the table. The incumbent in each district is the trustee the district’s board page lists for that area with a term expiring in 2026. The board calls its districts “areas.”

District 20. Saylors was first elected in November 2002, his board biography says. He is a former state president of the South Carolina School Boards Association. Giles finished 403 votes ahead of him in a three-way race.

District 18. Middleton, a retired FBI agent and former biology teacher, was elected in 2022, according to her board biography. McLaughlin led her by 525 votes.

District 26 was the closest school board race. Brett, the incumbent, led Meek by 181 votes. That is about 2.7% of the votes cast, outside the 1% recount line.

County Council: District 28 heads for a likely recount

Five County Council seats were on the ballot. Two were contested. County Council races are partisan.

Section 7-17-280 of the state code requires a recount when the margin between the winner and any other candidate is not more than 1% of the votes cast for the office. The trailing candidate can waive it in writing. The county board of canvassers orders the recount.

What happens next

The county board of canvassers meets Friday, Nov. 6. Under Section 7-17-10, it must finish its canvass by noon Saturday, Nov. 7. Provisional ballots are decided before then, so every figure on this page can still move. The District 28 result may not be settled until a recount is done.
