Where it is

This guide uses the city’s West End neighborhood engagement area, the boundary its police department uses for neighborhood work: about 0.36 square miles with roughly 1,150 residential addresses in the city’s address file. About 64% are in ZIP code 29601 and 36% in 29611. Two-thirds are units in apartment and condo buildings; about 220 are single-family houses and about 100 are townhouses. All are inside city limits, so the city provides police, fire and trash service. The city’s Fire Station 2, the West End Station, is at 125 N. Leach St.

Three historic listings fall inside it, according to the city’s National Register layer:

  • West End Commercial Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 29, 1998. The city also maps a West End preservation overlay, where exterior changes go to the Design Review Board.
  • Allen Temple A.M.E. Church, a National Register building.
  • Reedy River Falls Historic Park and Greenway, listed on Nov. 17, 1978.

The engagement area’s western edge overlaps the city’s Sterling special emphasis neighborhood, which has its own neighborhood plan.
