Attendance zone
Check an address with the district’s Find Your School lookup. Greenville County Schools assigns students by subdivision, apartment complex and street address, and zones do not follow the city limits.
We ran 222 addresses spread across Greenville’s city limits through the lookup on Oct. 16; 54 were zoned for Hughes Academy.
In the district’s 2026-27 subdivision list, the Hughes Academy zone takes in streets zoned for Robert E Cashion Elementary, Blythe Academy, Sara Collins Elementary, Augusta Circle Elementary, A.J. Whittenberg Elementary, Thomas E. Kerns Elementary, Greenbrier Elementary, Grove Elementary and East North Street Academy, and those streets go on to Greenville Senior High Academy, Southside High, Eastside High and J. L. Mann High Academy, most often the first named.
The Board of Trustees approved middle school boundary changes for Greenville Middle Academy, Hughes, League and Sevier on Oct. 22, 2024, as part of the plan for Reedy Laurel Elementary and other schools, according to the district’s board summary. The changes fill in one grade a year starting with sixth grade in 2025-26 and are complete in 2027-28, so some streets are zoned to one middle school for sixth and seventh grade and another for eighth this year. The district’s packet shows a loss of 1 student for Hughes Academy based on 2023-24 enrollment, and lets younger siblings stay with an older brother or sister at the old school.
Programs
Hughes Academy of Science and Technology is one of Greenville County Schools’ magnet academies. The district’s magnet academies page says the program “is dedicated to enriching and enhancing students’ academic achievement,” with weekly conversations with medical professionals and scientists in science and physical education classes, and a Spanish Immersion Transition program.
Magnet seats are open to students across the county by application through the Backpack parent portal. Applications are scored on attendance, discipline and academic performance, siblings of current magnet students have priority in the first round, and a lottery is used when more students qualify than there are seats, according to the same page.
